Do you snore? Want to stop? You've come to the right place. I don't know what it is about big guys, but boy howdy do they snore.
I got stuck in a hotel room with my brother-in-law on a trip once. We had two beds, he had his and I had mine. I go to sleep only to be awakened an hour or so later. I thought someone was tearing down one of the walls in the hotel room. He snored so loud. I couldn't believe he woke me up since I am a pretty sound sleeper.
I tried to ignore it but I couldn't. So I got up and took my pillow with me to go out in the hall but it was too bright. So I went back into the hotel room and secured myself in the bathroom. It didn't help. I had the bathroom fan on and I could still hear him 15 or 20 feet away through solid walls.
I wish I had something to give everyone that snored cause it is a major problem, not just to them but anyone that may be near them.
What causes snoring?
Apart from sleep apnea there are a few other possible causes of snoring. One is an obstruction of the nasal passages (sort of like having a cold or an allergy or a post nasal drip). Another reason is that as men get older there is an area of skin in the throat that folds over and blocks the air passage, and causes breathing problems. This is more common in men who are overweight (ah Ha), and sometimes can be remedied by an operation.
What can help?
No one can say for sure, although Doctors love to speculate. As far as I know there is no clear remedy for snoring. You may have tried a number of over the counter herbal remedies that are supposed to clear the nasal passages, but none help. You may have tried the breathe right strips. It's the plastic thing that is stuck on the bridge of the nose and is supposed to cause the nasal passages to be more open. Several people have had success with it, but it never seems to stay on their nose the entire night.
Sometimes if the snorer sleeps in a different position his air passage is not blocked which help in less snoring. But who can keep track of that when you're sleeping?
In some cases there is a type of ventilator machine that blows air into the man's mouth and prevents the breathing problems. This solution is more complicated, and you may have to go to a sleep laboratory where they will measure your breathing during the night and determine if the machine can help you.
Or you can try some special exercises that you can perform. They will eventually stop your snoring and you won't have to think about which side your laying on while you sleep.
